Homework

Homework is an essential part of the learning process. Saint George has a college homework policy, which outlines our expectations of homework and its contribution to progress and attainment across all subjects at KS3 and KS4. We look for parental support in helping to make sure homework and assignments are completed when required in addition to the 30mins to one hour of reading or revision per week, which is mandatory for all pupils.

Homework is important because it:

  • helps to consolidate and extend what is learnt in the classroom
  • helps teachers to assess students’ learning
  • develops individual learning responsibility
  • develops research and revision skills
  • prepares students for GCSE study

 Homework support and intervention
Up to two sessions per week of Homework Club are provided in our Learning Resource Centre (Library and Room 12) and/or Trinity. These sessions are open to all students, offering the opportunity to work collaboratively with peers where appropriate and make use of resources including computers. For some students, attendance at Homework Club will become compulsory if they are failing to complete homework or are falling behind with targets for progress and/or attainment.

Homework Club
is available in the Library
Room 12
Tuesdays and Thursdays,
from 3pm to 4pm.

Homework Marking
Students receive a grade for each piece of homework which is recorded in their Planner. Marks are from 1 to 5:
5 - Outstanding
4 - Very Good
3 - Good
2 - Satisfactory
1 - Poor/Not completed

Reading
In addition to subject homework, all pupils are expected to complete a minimum or 30mins to 1 hour of reading per week in KS3 and a minimum of 30mins to 1 hour independent reading or revision in KS4. Reading and revision is monitored by tutors and the college’s Literacy Co-ordinator and is followed by prizes or sanctions as appropriate.
