At Saint George, we aim to encourage learning through investigation, using a wide range of activities to maintain curiosity and enthusiasm amongst all students. We adopt an integrated approach across both key stages maintaining a balanced and challenging curriculum for all students.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 & 8 students follow a scheme if work that we have developed giving focus to the key ideas and concepts underpinning science; cells, energy, forces, particles & interdependence. Throughout each unit we work to develop the students’ skills in designing investigations, drawing conclusions from data and explaining phenomena using scientific ideas. We also place a great emphasis on developing the literacy and numeracy skills required to work and communicate scientifically.

Key Stage 4

In Year 9 we teach a Foundation Key Stage 4 course that introduces the most important concepts and ideas that students will come across in Core and Additional Science GCSEs. In year 10, students who show that they are already performing at an appropriate level are entered for a GCSE, which enables them to have more options in year 11. We currently offer a triple science GCSE route for those students who intend to go on to study A-Level Science. We also offer an astronomy GCSE as an alternative pathway to achieving three GCSEs in Science for those students capable of this who are not intending to take Science A-Levels. The remainder of the cohort study for two separate GCSEs (Core & Additional) and we currently also are able to offer a BTEC route for those students who find a course with a vocational emphasis and more of the assessment through ongoing assignments rather than terminal examinations. By having a full range of subject specialists students are supported, challenged and engaged by experts in all Key Stage 4 lessons.
